America’s first Emergency Notification System

Paul Revere’s "Midnight Ride" happened on the night of April 18, 1775, when he rode inland from Charlestown, Massachusetts to warn the local militias of the approach of British army troops from Boston.

Paul Revere was instructed to make as little noise as possible on the route. Instead, he chose to alarm the houses along the route by shouting out a warning of the approaching troops. The warning that Paul Revere and two other riders delivered throughout the night allowed the militia to repel the British troops.

Although there were other riders that night, the local militia was called together from an alarm and messenger system that Paul Revere had designed and implemented. He used his numerous contacts throughout the area to devise this system for the rapid call up of the militias to oppose the British.
